Virat Kohli’s former coach, Rajkumar Sharma, has shared details of a conversation about Kohli possibly returning to Test Cricket. Kohli, now 37, stepped away from Test matches in 2025 and is currently only playing One Day Internationals (ODIs).
India has been struggling in Test matches, facing challenges after losing a home series to South Africa and being whitewashed by New Zealand in 2024. They also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia.
During this tough period, many fans have encouraged Kohli to come back and boost the batting lineup. Rajkumar offered a glimmer of hope regarding Kohli’s potential return, saying they have discussed it.
“Baat toh hui hai, dekhte hai kya hota hai (We have talked about it; let’s see what happens.),” Rajkumar Sharma mentioned on the Express Cafe podcast.
Kohli ranks as one of India’s top Test players prior to his retirement, having played 123 matches and scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. He is also recognized as one of India’s successful Test captains, winning 40 out of the 68 matches he led.
Despite Kohli’s absence, the Indian team, under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, managed to draw 2-2 in a series against England in 2025, with a memorable victory in the final Test at the Kia Oval.
Currently, Kohli is focused on helping India achieve World Cup success in 2027, after missing out in 2023. He has been included in the ODI squad for an upcoming series against Afghanistan following the 2026 Indian Premier League.
