India’s announcements for the Ireland and England series, along with the Asian Games, featured several unexpected decisions. One of the most notable was the exclusion of Hardik Pandya.
Pandya is recognized as India’s top seam-bowling allrounder in white-ball Cricket. His absence from all three squads has drawn attention in the cricket community. Here are three reasons behind the selectors’ decision:
1. Workload management ahead of ODI World Cup 2027
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, stated that Hardik’s exclusion is part of a long-term strategy. The focus is on keeping him ready for the ODI World Cup 2027, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. His fitness is crucial for India’s success in the tournament.
“He is part of the one-day squad for the Afghanistan series. Our main goal is to keep him fit and playing well for one-day cricket, since he hasn’t played recently,” Agarkar said during a media briefing.
2. Developing young seam-bowling allrounders in T20Is
The selectors aim to use the T20 format to nurture younger seam-bowling allrounders. This strategy will provide India with more options in the future and lessen the team’s dependence on Hardik in T20 matches. Nitish Reddy has been highlighted as a player who can benefit from T20 opportunities.
“We can always bring him back. This also allows us to give someone like Nitish Reddy some chances in T20 cricket. So, there will be some rest and rotation regarding Hardik,” Agarkar added.
3. Hardik Pandya’s IPL 2026 performance
Hardik’s performance in IPL 2026 may have also played a role in the selectors’ decision. The Mumbai Indians faced a tough season, finishing ninth on the points table, and Hardik had a challenging year himself.
He scored only 206 runs across 10 matches, averaging 22.88 with a strike rate of 138.25. His bowling was also disappointing, taking just four wickets in 10 games at an economy rate of 11.42. These statistics did not support his case for selection.
