Sri Lanka’s Cricket team faces a significant challenge as Eshan Malinga, a fast bowler, will miss the T20 World Cup 2026 due to a dislocated shoulder. He sustained the injury during the second T20I match against England on Sunday.

Malinga injured his shoulder while delivering a full toss to Tom Banton. He immediately felt pain and fell to the ground. The team physio attended to him before he had to leave the field.

He will now head to Colombo for scans. Early assessments suggest he will be out for four to six weeks, making him unavailable for the World Cup.

Madushanka or Madushan Set to Replace Malinga

Sri Lankan journalist Nibraz Ramzan reports that the selectors are looking at Dilshan Madushanka and Pramod Madushan as potential replacements for Malinga. One of these two players will be added to the main team.

The selectors have a tough job ahead, as both bowlers have unique skills that the team requires.

Why Sri Lanka Will Miss Eshan Malinga

Malinga’s absence will impact Sri Lanka, even with other strong bowlers like Matheesha Pathirana and Dushmantha Chameera. His experience brought a special quality to the team.

He was key in finishing matches well, known for delivering precise yorkers under pressure. This injury is particularly frustrating as Pathirana has not been consistently performing lately.

Madushanka vs Madushan: Who Fits Better?

Dilshan Madushanka is a left-arm seamer who excels with the new ball. He has played 15 T20I matches and taken 15 wickets, although with an economy rate of 9.75, which is higher than desired.

Pramod Madushan, on the other hand, has claimed 12 wickets in 8 T20I matches, with a more economical rate of 8.63. His sharpness in the middle and death overs may make him a suitable replacement for Malinga.

Sri Lanka’s Group Stage Schedule

Sri Lanka is in Group B with Australia, Ireland, Oman, and Zimbabwe. Their opening match against Ireland is set for February 8, followed by matches against Oman on February 12, Australia on February 16, and Zimbabwe on February 19.

Despite the setback, the Sri Lankan team is determined to advance to the Super 8.
