Rob Key has praised Ollie Robinson as a ‘world-class’ fast bowler after including him in England’s squad for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s. Robinson is making a return to the national team after over two years, having last played during England’s tour of India, where he experienced a back spasm.
The 32-year-old was a key addition to the 15-member squad for England’s first Test since the 4-1 defeat in the Ashes series. Throughout his career, Robinson has faced various injuries and scrutiny regarding his fitness during the 2021-22 Ashes. Despite these challenges, Key highlighted his talent and contributions in red-ball Cricket.
Robinson has taken 76 wickets in 20 Test matches with an impressive average of 22.92, showcasing his skill when he is fit and performing well.
“We’ve been quite clear with Ollie about his previous exclusion, both to him and publicly. When he’s fit and bowling at his usual pace of about 82-83 mph, he is world-class. Statistically, he ranks among the top bowlers globally,” said Key as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
After being omitted from England’s Ashes squad, Robinson responded strongly by taking 11 wickets for Sussex in a County Championship match against Worcestershire. He has since been named captain of Sussex, leading the team to three wins in five matches.
Robinson recently mentioned that England head coach Brendon McCullum encouraged him to strive for a return to the Test side. Key confirmed that communication between Robinson and the management has been steady during his absence.
“We’ve kept a close eye on him. Appointing him as captain has really helped bring out his best. He appears to have regained full fitness, which is essential for us. We’ve been in touch with him frequently, and he’s proactive in asking what he needs to do to impress. He needs to maintain his skill and speed throughout the game, which he has done,” Key added.
