Slow left-arm orthodox bowler Liam Dawson has announced his retirement from first-class Cricket effective immediately. Over his impressive career, Dawson took 380 wickets and scored 18 centuries. The 36-year-old played four Tests for England, making his debut against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on December 16.
This match featured Karun Nair’s unbeaten 303, leading India to a victory by an innings and 75 runs. Dawson’s bowling figures were 2/129 in 43 overs as India posted a total of 759/7 before declaring.
In 2024, Dawson was named the men’s Player of the Year at the Professional Cricketers’ Association awards. He also received the Overall Domestic MVP and County Championship Player of the Year awards before being recalled to the England Test team last year.
His final red-ball match for England was against India in Manchester last July. Dawson expressed his commitment to playing white-ball cricket for his county, Hampshire.
“I’ve decided to retire from first-class cricket,” said Dawson in a press release. “This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right one to extend my career in white-ball cricket.”
“I’m very proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and cherish the great memories I’ve made with many players. I’m dedicated to white-ball cricket for Hampshire and continuing our success.”
“Thank you to the fans and members for your support throughout the years. Hampshire will always be my home, and I look forward to playing for you all at Utilita Bowl soon.”
