Head coach Gautam Gambhir has confirmed that Sai Sudharsan will continue as India’s No. 3 in Test Cricket. Speaking at a press conference before India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan, Gambhir dismissed speculation about Devdutt Padikkal possibly replacing Sudharsan.
In his six Tests, Sudharsan has scored 302 runs with an average of 27.45, including two half-centuries and a top score of 87. Gambhir stated that Sudharsan “hasn’t got a fair chance” and deserves more opportunities, especially after his strong performance in the recent IPL season.
“Honestly, Sai hasn’t got a fair chance,” Gambhir mentioned. “He has only played a handful of Test matches, and starting his career in England isn’t easy. He also had a great IPL performance, so he should be given a proper chance.”
“You can only select eleven players, and sometimes you have to wait for your chance. I believe we should give players a fair run,” he added. “Sai is also not in bad form; he scored 722 runs in the IPL. Judging players based on just a few Test matches isn’t the way to build a team.”
