Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a promising young batsman, is making waves in Indian Cricket. Former India captain K Srikkanth believes he could be a significant force in the future of Test cricket.
At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi has been named in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming trip to Ireland and England after showcasing strong performances in franchise cricket. While he is already making a name for himself in white-ball formats, Srikkanth thinks his greatest influence may be seen in Test matches as he continues to grow as a player.
Srikkanth praised Sooryavanshi’s eagerness to score runs and his skill in handling bowlers, noting his capacity to bat for extended periods.
“What stands out about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is his desire to score and to dominate. He can also stick around and play,” Srikkanth said, as quoted by Times of India.
“If he advances from T20 to one-day cricket and eventually to Test cricket, and if he finds his footing in Test matches, you will see a resurgence of interest in the format,” he added.
According to Srikkanth, Sooryavanshi has a unique ability to attract viewers simply through his exciting batting style.
“We need players like him. People tune in to watch Sooryavanshi. I switch on the TV just to see him play. That’s the aura he has created. It’s remarkable,” he said.
The former chief selector also reminded fans and analysts not to judge Sooryavanshi based on his recent outings for India A in Sri Lanka.
“You can’t judge a player based on one series. It’s just unfair. Give him some time. Vaibhav, don’t let what others say affect you; just play your natural game,” he advised.
When asked if Sooryavanshi reminded him of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who made his International debut under Srikkanth’s leadership, he chose not to make a direct comparison, but expressed his admiration for the young player.
“Let’s not compare Sachin and Sooryavanshi. Sachin is the God of cricket, and this boy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, I believe, is like his son. Let’s leave Sachin out of it; nobody can match him,” he concluded.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scored 117 runs in four matches, with a strike rate of 153.95, in the ongoing Tri Nation A Series in Sri Lanka.
