Playing for the Indian Cricket team is a dream for many young players in the country. However, only a few get to wear the blue jersey at the highest level. Even among those who succeed, some have long careers while others are quickly replaced.
Once a player is out of the national side, it’s often challenging to make a comeback, especially as they age, regardless of their hard work and commitment.
Here are three players who might be nearing the end of their careers in the Indian team:
1. Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami last represented India in the Champions Trophy 2025, where he was one of the top wicket-takers, claiming nine wickets in five matches. Since then, he hasn’t been selected for the national team, even after performing well in domestic cricket. With no inclusion for the World Cup 2027, his career appears to be winding down.
2. Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar recently led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026 on home ground. However, he has now lost his captaincy and his spot in the team due to recent poor performances. At 35 years old, he had hoped to compete in the men’s cricket event at the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 and the World Cup the same year. Unfortunately, his aspirations may remain unmet, with many players vying for limited positions in the squad.
3. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Bhuvneshwar Kumar showed impressive form during the recently concluded IPL 2026, being the second-highest wicket-taker with 28 wickets from 16 matches. His contributions were vital in helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru win the title again. However, despite his strong performance, he hasn’t been considered for a return to the Indian team. The 36-year-old last played internationally during the T20 World Cup 2022, and it seems his chances for a comeback are slim.
