Michael Vaughan, a former England cricketer, has stated that removing Ben Stokes from his position as England’s Test captain would be a mistake. Vaughan believes that Stokes deserves recognition for his contributions since he took on the captaincy and that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) should value his role in the team’s development.

Stokes has been in the news following an incident at a pub with teammate Gus Atkinson on June 8. This event has led to speculation about his future as captain. However, Vaughan has defended Stokes, arguing that one off-field incident should not tarnish his overall positive influence on English cricket.

“Yes, Ben Stokes broke a curfew. Yes, he made a mistake. But is that a reason to sack him as England’s Test captain? I do not think so. Stokes has earned respect for his leadership and all-around performance. Those at the ECB do not have the same level of credit with the fans,” Vaughan wrote in The Telegraph.

“Now, they either need to take a stand and say, ‘We are sacking you for this,’ or they should support him and move forward. The ECB seems to be waiting for Stokes to make a decision for them. They need to be strong and do what they believe is right. If that means sacking him, then so be it, but I disagree with that approach,” he added.

Ravi Bopara, another former England player, has also commented on the situation, urging both fans and analysts to hold off on judgments while the ECB examines the matter. Bopara highlighted the importance of a fair investigation before making any decisions, insisting that all details should be understood first.

“It’s crucial to ensure the proper process is followed, and we shouldn’t rush to conclusions, as that wouldn’t be fair to Ben (Stokes) or English cricket. Stokes is a significant figure for the team, and with that comes great responsibility. We hope the right process is carried out so everything can be resolved correctly,” Bopara stated on Sky Cricket.
