New Zealand has brought back Henry Nicholls to bat at No. 3 in the Test match at The Oval, replacing Kane Williamson, who has retired from International Cricket. Nicholls, 34, has played only two Tests in 2024, both during New Zealand’s tour of Zimbabwe last year while Williamson was occupied with The Hundred tournament.
While Nicholls typically bats at No. 5, he stepped up to No. 3 during the Zimbabwe series and will continue in that position against England. Captain Tom Latham confirmed this decision before Tuesday’s training, stating that Nicholls’ strong domestic performance made him a deserving choice.
“He has a lot of experience. Although he’s been out of the squad for a couple of years, he’s earned his way back with his domestic runs. It’s an exciting opportunity for him to return in a No. 3 role that he’s been doing for Canterbury,” Latham said, as noted by ESPNcricinfo.
“Historically, he has batted at No. 4 or 5. However, in domestic cricket, he often plays at No. 3 or 4. The good thing with Henry is that he’s adaptable. This is a great chance for him to take on something new in Test cricket,” he added.
Will Young was another option for the No. 3 spot, having performed well during New Zealand’s series win in India when Williamson was out. However, Young’s recent form has not been consistent, and he just arrived in the UK after being called up as batting cover.
Latham expressed disappointment over Williamson’s retirement after their first Test loss at The Oval but noted that it wasn’t entirely unexpected, given Williamson’s diminishing international role over the past two years.
“It’s been a gradual process. Over his 16-year career, Williamson has always given 100 percent whenever he played or trained, showcasing the qualities of our team,” Latham said.
“Acknowledging that he’s not quite right to perform at that level shows his character. It’s a tough loss for us, but we appreciate everything he’s done throughout his career,” he added.
