Ireland has appointed Lorcan Tucker as the new permanent T20I captain ahead of their two-match series against India, starting on Friday, June 26, at Stormont Cricket Ground in Belfast.

Tucker, who previously led the national team twice in T20 matches, takes over from Paul Stirling as they aim to qualify for the 2028 T20 World Cup.

At 29, Tucker has significant T20 experience, having played 91 matches since his debut in 2016. In addition to his role as captain, he has also shown leadership with Leinster Lightning, his Inter-Provincial team.

“It’s a great privilege to be named captain, something I didn’t expect when I started my career. I feel a strong responsibility to represent the players and the organization, as well as honoring the captains who came before me. I admire past captains of Ireland and am proud to join them,” Tucker stated on Cricket Ireland’s official website.

Ireland unveils new T20I squad vs India

In addition to announcing a new captain, Ireland has revealed their squad for the upcoming series against India. Three players—Matthew Hollard, Jai Moondra, and Reuben Wilson—are set to make their T20I debuts. Wilson has previously played one Test match for Ireland against New Zealand earlier this year.

Six regular T20I players are absent from the squad due to injuries, including former captain Stirling (torn calf muscle), Josh Little (stress fracture), Mark Adair (muscle tear), and Curtis Campher (hand fracture).
