West Indies bowling coach Ravi Rampaul admitted that the Narendra Modi Stadium pitch hardly had anything for the bowlers. Even though the spinners got some turn as the day progressed, the West Indies bowlers could not find breakthroughs as Indian batters piled on the runs to take a sizeable lead at the end of Day 2.
“It was a very tough day. We tried different tactical strategies. I guess going forward, we could probably stick to that a little bit more. There was nothing much there for the bowlers throughout the day,” Rampal said, adding that things could have been worse on that pitch had his bowlers not been disciplined.
While he was surprised that spinners did not have an impact in most parts of the game, Rampaul admitted that batting was indeed a letdown. “Had we batted a bit better, things would have been [different]. But early on, we lost those quick wickets and those wickets we lost in the first session put us in this situation,” he added.

In the absence of Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph, the West Indies fast bowling unit lacked experience and Rampul accepted that it’s a huge challenge. Though India had three centurions in KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja, Rampal said that bowling to Jadeja was most challenging.
“He (Jadeja) was a little bit more attacking. He was attacking the spinners more, trying to throw them off the line by shifting down a little more [and hitting] over the top,” he said.
