Fourteen former International captains have requested the Government of Pakistan to provide medical care and improved treatment for Imran Khan due to concerns about his health. They submitted a one-page letter, urging swift action regarding his condition.
This plea follows reports that Imran, who has been in solitary confinement for several months, is experiencing significant vision loss in his right eye.
The letter has notable signatories, including former India captains Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, Australia’s Greg Chappell, Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Sir Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh, and John Wright.
“We respectfully urge the Government of Pakistan to ensure that Imran Khan receives:
- “Immediate, adequate and ongoing medical attention from qualified specialists of his choosing to address his reported health issues.
- “Humane and dignified conditions of detention in line with international standards, including regular visits by close family members.
- “Fair and transparent access to legal processes without undue delay or hindrance,” it reads.
“Recent reports about his health, especially concerning the decline in his vision while in custody, and the conditions of his imprisonment have raised our serious concerns,” the statement noted.
“As fellow cricketers who value fair play and respect, we believe Imran Khan deserves dignity and consideration given his status as a former national leader and sports icon,” they stated.
The statement also recognized Imran’s contributions to Cricket, highlighting Pakistan’s remarkable 1992 ODI World Cup win under his captaincy.
“Imran Khan’s contributions to cricket are widely respected. He led Pakistan to its historic 1992 Cricket World Cup victory, showcasing skill, leadership, and sportsmanship that inspired many,” it stated.
“Many of us played against him, were on the same field, or admired his all-round talent. He remains one of the greatest all-rounders and captains, earning respect from players and fans alike.
“Outside cricket, Imran served as Prime Minister, guiding Pakistan through tough times. Regardless of political views, he was democratically elected to the highest office in his country,” the statement continued.
The former captains called on the Pakistan Government to uphold decency and justice principles.
“Cricket has always connected nations. Our shared history on the field shows that rivalry ends when the match is over, and respect remains. Imran Khan embodied this spirit throughout his career.
“We urge the authorities to honor this by ensuring decency and justice. This appeal is made in the spirit of sportsmanship and human kindness, independent of any legal matters.”
Earlier, former Pakistani cricketers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis expressed deep concern about Imran’s health.
“It is heartbreaking to hear about Imran Khan’s health issues,” Wasim, who regards Imran as a significant influence on his career, posted on X, formerly Twitter. “I hope the authorities act seriously to ensure he gets the best medical care. Wishing him strength and a swift recovery.”
Waqar also shared his thoughts:
“Setting politics aside, our national hero, who gave us our greatest achievements in sports and established a cancer hospital that has helped many, is facing a health emergency and needs urgent treatment. I kindly request the relevant authorities to provide timely care. Get well soon, skipper.”
Other notable figures raising their voices for Imran include Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Ramiz Raja, and Mohammad Hafeez.
