The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will make its long-awaited return to Jamaica in the 2026 season after being absent for six years. A new franchise based in Jamaica is set to launch, and four matches will be held at the historic Sabina Park, a key venue in Caribbean Cricket.
No matches took place in Jamaica since 2019 after the former Jamaica Tallawahs franchise moved and was rebranded for the 2024 season. This return follows successful discussions between CPL officials and the Jamaican government, with support from the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and the Ministry of Tourism.
CPL CEO Pete Russell described this development as a significant moment for the league, highlighting Jamaica’s importance in West Indies cricket.
“We are thrilled to bring the CPL back to Jamaica in 2026. Jamaica has a rich cricketing heritage and unique energy that makes it a special destination in the region. The return of a Jamaican franchise and matches at Sabina Park is what fans have wanted, and we are excited to collaborate with the Government of Jamaica to make this happen,” he said.
Olivia Grange, Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, noted that the tournament’s return will have broader benefits for the island.
“The Government of Jamaica is pleased to welcome the Caribbean Premier League back to our shores. This event goes beyond cricket; it promotes economic growth, showcases our culture globally, and inspires our youth through sports. We look forward to hosting players, fans, and partners in 2026 and providing an unforgettable CPL experience,” said Grange.
Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett stated that the CPL’s return aligns with efforts to enhance city tourism, while Cricket West Indies president Dr. Kishore Shallow highlighted the significance of restoring a franchise to such a passionate cricketing area.
“Everyone at Cricket West Indies is delighted to see CPL cricket returning to Jamaica. The island has a special place in Caribbean cricket, having produced some of the greatest players in history and generations of dedicated supporters who inspire the game,” Shallow said.
More information about the new franchise’s ownership and team will be provided as the 2026 season approaches.
