Recently, there have been reports about a significant development in India‘s T20 World Cup 2026 journey. On February 17, 2026, it was revealed that a leading Indian Premier League (IPL) team has approached Gautam Gambhir with a bold leadership offer.
This proposal comes as the franchise is experiencing a change in ownership, and the new stakeholders are eager to find an experienced strategist. Although this news has stirred interest in the Cricket community, it arises during India’s strong performance in the current tournament. However, any decision is still uncertain due to strict regulations and ongoing commitments to the national team.
IPL 2026: The proposed triple-role for head coach Gautam Gambhir
A report from Dainik Jagran indicates that one of the new stakeholders in the Rajasthan Royals (RR) has offered Gambhir a unique ‘triple-role’ package. This proposal includes roles as CEO, Mentor, and Partner, giving him substantial control over operations and a place in ownership.
The offer reportedly includes a 2% to 3% equity stake in the franchise, valued at over $1 billion during its ongoing share transfer. This move is inspired by Gambhir’s successful history as a mentor, particularly his role in leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 before he took over as head coach. By providing him with a stake, the new management hopes to instill a winning culture in Rajasthan, as they refresh their leadership with Riyan Parag recently appointed as captain for the 2026 season.
“Most of the shareholders of Rajasthan Royals are selling their stakes to new owners. The deal is in the process of being finalized. One of the new owners has offered Gambhir a two-to-three percent stake, along with the positions of CEO and mentor,” the report stated.
