Sanju Samson led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth win in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 8 wickets in Match 48 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Samson showcased his skill with an impressive innings of 87* off 52 balls, hitting seven fours and six sixes, as CSK easily chased down the target of 156.

After joining CSK through one of the biggest player trades in the tournament’s history, Samson has embraced his role and is currently the top run-scorer for his team. The opener has scored 402 runs in ten innings, averaging 57.42, with a strike rate of 167.50, including two centuries and one half-century.

Samson’s consistent scoring has been crucial for CSK, as the team has won every match where he scored over 40 runs. His current form and sharp wicketkeeping skills remind many of a key player the team is currently missing.

Samson steps up in Dhoni’s absence

As MS Dhoni recovers from injury, CSK have felt his absence, especially with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad struggling and other players sidelined. They have been in need of someone to boost their spirits during this tough season.

Samson has emerged as that figure, calmly handling pressure on the field and providing reassurance to his teammates. When he’s batting, the team feels more confident about their chances of winning.

CSK’s batting strength

In addition to his batting, Samson has made valuable contributions as a wicketkeeper, completing four dismissals. With Dhoni’s return still uncertain, Samson’s form and experience are vital for CSK as they navigate a critical part of the season.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has praised his teammate, calling him the backbone of CSK’s batting lineup.

“I’m really grateful to have Sanju in the side, especially after his performance in the World Cup and now,” Gaikwad said in the post-match presentation. “He is definitely the backbone now,”

With five wins from ten matches, CSK is currently sixth in the IPL 2026 points table, holding ten points. After a slow start, they now have a real chance to qualify for the playoffs. As the five-time champions aim for a top-four finish, Samson’s batting will be key to their success.
