In the Indian Premier League (IPL), strong leadership is crucial for a team’s success. A capable captain can motivate the team, while poor leadership can disrupt the entire campaign. At the halfway point of IPL 2026, three captains have distinguished themselves with their clear strategies and calmness under pressure.

1. Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings)

Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the leading captain this season, guiding Punjab to six victories in their first seven matches. The only setback came when rain washed out their game against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 6, where a seventh win seemed likely.

Iyer has maintained consistency by keeping player roles clear, allowing them to perform confidently. Under his leadership, Punjab has also triumphed over strong teams, defeating both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians at their home grounds.

2. Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans)

Shubman Gill started his captaincy under some pressure. In the opening match, he delayed using top bowler Prasidh Krishna until the 13th over while defending a score of 163. Although Prasidh performed well, the delay cost them the match.

Gill quickly adapted his approach. In match 14 against Delhi Capitals, he trusted Prasidh to defend 12 runs in the last over, leading to a narrow victory. Gujarat Titans are now on a three-match winning streak, and Gill’s timely bowling changes have kept opponents under control in recent matches.

3. Ishan Kishan (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Ishan Kishan took over as interim captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad when it was evident that Pat Cummins would be unavailable at the start. Facing early losses, Kishan leaned on his experience from domestic Cricket to bring stability. He led the team to three consecutive wins, moving SRH into the top four of the points table.

By the time he passed the captaincy back to Cummins during match 36 against Rajasthan Royals, SRH was well in the running for the playoffs. Kishan’s temporary leadership showed that even short stints can significantly impact a team’s performance.

At the mid-season point, Shreyas, Shubman, and Ishan exemplify essential qualities of leadership in the IPL: clarity, adaptability, and resilience. As the league approaches its final stages, their contributions have already made a lasting impression beyond just the scores.
