England fast bowler Sonny Baker has expressed that earning his first Test cap would be a dream for him early in his International career.
Following a challenging Ashes series, England is likely to make several changes to their Test team for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. This could impact the bowling lineup, with Baker among those competing for a spot. Additionally, injuries to senior players Brydon Carse and Mark Wood may open up opportunities.
Baker sees playing for England in Tests as the highlight of his career, and he aspires to participate in an Ashes series. The 23-year-old aims to perform his best on the field without stressing about his selection for the home series.
“Getting a Test cap would be an absolute dream come true. Test Cricket is the pinnacle of cricket, especially Ashes cricket. It’s part of why we play. Everyone has imagined being Australia versus England in the backyard. In terms of readiness, that’s up to the selectors. I can only focus on learning,” Sonny Baker told Sky Sports.
Baker has already made his ODI and T20I debuts for England, playing one match in each format but has not yet taken a wicket at the international level.
After a successful season at the domestic level and with the England Lions last year, Baker received an England Central Contract. Still, his chances with the national side have been limited.
Currently, Baker, who plays for Hampshire, has taken 14 wickets in four County Championship matches this season, averaging 26.21. This includes a five-wicket haul against Somerset in a losing match.
