The Punjab Kings have dominated with their batting in this IPL season. Their top order has consistently overpowered bowling attacks, making even big chases seem easy. A standout moment occurred at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Match 35, where they achieved an impressive 265 runs, marking the highest successful chase in T20 history.
In the first half of the season, their batting strength led to six wins in seven matches, establishing them as strong competitors.
However, T20 Cricket can expose weaknesses, and Punjab’s recent downturn, with three straight losses, shows that strong batting alone is insufficient. Their fielding has shown notable flaws. The statistics highlight a troubling issue.
Punja’s Poor Fielding Performance
This season, they have had 56 catching opportunities but have dropped 16, according to ESPNcricinfo. Shashank Singh has accounted for five of those drops. A catching rate of 71.43% is not ideal for a team competing in the IPL, where every opportunity matters.
Even before their recent losses, Punjab narrowly avoided serious consequences. In a match against Delhi at Arun Jaitley, Shashank Singh dropped KL Rahul when he was on 12 at deep square leg. Rahul went on to score an unbeaten 152, leading Delhi to 264, and making Punjab’s bowlers seem ineffective. Thanks to their strong batting, Punjab managed to chase it down, but this close call highlighted their fielding weaknesses.
The worst moment came in match 49 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Punjab’s fielding fell apart. Cooper Connolly dropped Ishan Kishan when he was on 9, missing an easy chance at deep square leg.
In the following over, Shashank Singh dropped Heinrich Klaasen on 9, allowing him to score four runs after fumbling a simple catch at long leg. To add to their woes, Ferguson misjudged another opportunity at fine leg, letting Ishan escape again when he was on 18. These mistakes were costly.
Ishan went on to score 55 off 32 balls, while Klaasen added 69 off 43. Their performances helped SRH reach a total of 235. Despite Punjab’s batting talent, they could only manage 202 in response.
Punjab Faces Reality
As T20 cricket is often seen as a batsman’s game, the Punjab Kings are learning that runs alone do not guarantee victories. Effective fielding is crucial, and currently, Punjab is struggling in that area. The saying “catches win matches” remains true, and unless Punjab improves their fielding, their batting prowess will continue to be overshadowed by missed opportunities.
