Australia’s Men’s Head Coach Andrew McDonald has mentioned that the team may consider Cameron Green as a potential finisher as they aim to defend their title in the Cricket World Cup set for late 2027.

McDonald noted that Green could step in for Glenn Maxwell, who retired from ODIs in 2025, creating a significant opening for a finisher role. Green has previously played various positions in the team and scored a century off 47 balls against South Africa last August, showcasing his power-hitting ability.

“It’s really about where we position him and the role we want him to take. He has the capacity to bat high or low in the order. His power was evident in the Top End series last year against South Africa when he finished off the innings in Glenn Maxwell’s absence. We discuss these roles openly as we explore options leading up to the 2027 World Cup,” McDonald stated before the squad’s departure to Pakistan, as reported by Cricbuzz.

The coach further emphasized that Green’s all-rounder skills could be valuable, especially as the team looks for a fifth bowler.

“His versatility gives us options. The fifth bowler role is crucial for any team. We have typically relied on four frontline bowlers, with all-rounders taking on that fifth position. I believe he has an important role to play with the ball as well,” McDonald explained.

‘It is something we’re looking at’ – McDonald on Tim David’s return to the ODI squad

McDonald also mentioned that the team is considering Tim David‘s return to the ODI lineup. David has participated in four ODIs for Australia this year but has not played in them recently due to franchise commitments.

“It’s something we’re keeping an eye on. Tim hasn’t yet made himself available for ODIs amidst his other engagements. But we are open to the possibility of discussing it in the future,” McDonald said.

He further noted that David would need to express his desire to play for the ODI squad before being considered for selection.

“Tim would need to come to us and indicate his intention to participate in one-day International cricket. We utilized him in the lead-up to the last World Cup, as we believed he could serve well in that finishing role at number seven. Can Tim be part of that discussion? Perhaps, but currently he is not available,” he added.

Australia is set to face Pakistan in a three-match ODI series starting on May 30 in Rawalpindi.
