Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is relieved after avoiding penalties from the International Cricket Council (ICC). This comes after significant administrative changes with the formation of a government-supported Transformation Committee.

The ICC board recently met in Ahmedabad and reviewed the impact of this new committee on SLC’s operations. They decided not to impose any sanctions, raising hopes among members of the Transformation Committee.

A member of the Transformation Committee mentioned to ESPNcricinfo, “Right now, no news is good news,” highlighting their relief even though they were not present at the ICC meeting.

This relief is significant given past incidents where the ICC has penalized SLC due to governmental involvement. In 2015 and again in 2023, sanctions were imposed, with the latter leading to Sri Lanka losing the rights to host the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup 2024, which was moved to South Africa.

The ICC’s official statement revealed that Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja and BCCI representative Devajit Saikia visited Sri Lanka to meet with the Transformation Committee to discuss current developments.

The ICC press release stated, “In Sri Lanka, ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja and Devajit Saikia (BCCI) have visited and met with relevant stakeholders to assess ongoing developments.”

The Transformation Committee was established on April 30 following public dissatisfaction after Sri Lanka’s early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The committee’s goal is to create a new constitution that provides a solid and modern framework for the sport.

Kumar Sangakkara is a well-known figure in this committee, which is led by chairman Eran Wickramaratne. Most members come from corporate or legal backgrounds.
