The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has launched its first franchise T20 tournament, the Afghanistan Premier League (APL), which will kick off on December 27, 2026, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The UAE will provide top-notch venues, advanced broadcast technology, high production standards, and access to a large audience passionate about cricket. The league will consist of five franchises representing key cricket regions in Afghanistan: Kabul, Kandahar, Balkh, Paktia, and Nangarhar.

With a growing pool of talented Afghan players and interest from International stars, the APL aims to become a competitive and commercially successful tournament right from its start.

The ACB is looking for investors and commercial partners worldwide to join in the franchise ownership process, with proposals accepted until June 30, 2026.

ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf highlighted their goal of creating a globally recognized cricket league that showcases Afghan talent on the international stage.

“The Afghanistan Premier League is an important step for Afghan cricket. Through the APL, we plan to create a sustainable cricket property that highlights Afghan talent, attracts global investment, and boosts the growth of the game,” Ashraf stated in a media release.

APL launches at a key moment

The APL is debuting when demand for quality cricket content is peaking. Broadcasters and sponsors are investing in premium cricket properties that can engage fans year-round.

In addition to providing top-level entertainment, the league aims to create more opportunities for Afghan cricketers, enhance the cricketing framework in the country, promote Afghan culture globally, and support the rise of Afghanistan as one of the fastest-growing cricket nations.
