Sydney Thunder has appointed Andrew Flintoff as their new head coach, succeeding Trevor Bayliss. The former England allrounder has signed a two-year contract and will stay until the end of BBL | 17. Bayliss had been with Thunder for five years and guided them to a runners-up finish in the 2024-25 season. However, a last-place finish in 2025-26 ended his time with the team.
Thunder general manager Trent Copeland called the appointment a “significant day in the history of Sydney Thunder and the BBL overall.”
“This is an important moment for Sydney Thunder and the BBL,” Copeland stated in a press release. “Flintoff offers something unique to the team. He is a global Cricket icon and a modern leader who knows how to create high-performance environments, connect with players, and establish lasting standards. His enthusiasm for coaching and understanding of Australian cricket and our Thunder program stood out during the selection process.”
“Our aim is not just immediate success; we want to create a culture and identity that ensures lasting success for the future.”
