Ajit Agarkar will continue as BCCI’s Chairman of Selectors until June 2027. His tenure originally began in July 2023 and is now extended.

During his time, the Indian team reached the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and won back-to-back T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, plus the Champions Trophy in 2025.

With the next ODI World Cup scheduled for October and November next year, the BCCI wants to keep Agarkar due to his ability to make tough decisions. They also seek continuity, as selectors RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha are still new in their roles.

Under Agarkar’s leadership, the team managed a smooth transition and made bold choices. The board believes he should remain in his position. BCCI officials plan to speak with him during IPL games to provide updates,” a BCCI official told the Indian Express.

Agarkar has faced challenges with the Test team. A key issue is the Indian batsmen’s struggle with spin at home, highlighted by a 3-0 series loss against New Zealand in late 2024 and a 2-0 defeat to South Africa in late 2025.

His time in office also coincided with the retirements of R Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, mainstays in Test Cricket for India. He successfully appointed Shubman Gill as the Test team captain, who managed to draw a 2-2 series in England while performing well with the bat.

Agarkar has also influenced the white-ball team. He made two significant decisions: appointing Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain and recalling Ishan Kishan for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

“We want to try two keepers at the top (Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan). The team management will decide the combinations. With Rinku (Singh) added, we get more depth in the lower middle order. It’s about combinations, so someone has to miss out, and unfortunately, it is Gill now,” Agarkar remarked before the T20 World Cup.

Kishan previously had a dispute with the BCCI in 2023 after taking a “mental break” and returning slowly to domestic cricket. In 2025, he excelled in the domestic circuit, becoming the leading run-scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy while leading Jharkhand to victory. This decision was controversial as it saw Kishan replace Shubman Gill, but he justified this choice by scoring 317 runs at a strike rate of 193.29 during India’s successful campaign.
