The Mumbai Indians, five-time champions, had a challenging season in IPL 2026. They ended up with only four wins out of 14 matches and suffered 10 losses. They narrowly avoided finishing last by placing ninth, thanks to a slightly better net run rate (-0.584) compared to Lucknow Super Giants (-0.740).

As preparations for IPL 2027 begin, MI may need to let go of some underperforming players to avoid a similar outcome. Here are three players likely to be released before the next season:

1. Trent Boult

Trent Boult, a key player for Mumbai Indians, is third in wickets (62) among active MI players, behind Hardik Pandya (71) and Jasprit Bumrah (190). However, in IPL 2026, he struggled, taking only two wickets in five matches and allowing runs at an economy of 11.62.

His wickets cost MI an average of 94 runs each. With a retention fee of INR 12.50 crore, his performance is no longer worth that expense. At age 36 and having concluded his International career, Boult may be past his best.

2. Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar’s lackluster performance added to MI’s bowling issues. With Jasprit Bumrah not in form, Chahar was expected to lead but only managed eight wickets in eight matches, with an economy of 10.39.

Since he isn’t seen as a strong option in critical moments, he needed to perform well in the powerplay but fell short. His inability to make an early impact could lead MI to consider other options. He was retained for INR 9.25 crore.

3. Robin Minz

Robin Minz has not made a significant impact in his two seasons with MI. In four games, he scored just 12 runs at a strike rate of 63.16, with a top score of 5.

While some might say he hasn’t had enough chances, the IPL is tough on players who don’t take advantage of opportunities. As a result, MI may opt to move on from him.
