Gujarat Titans (GT) had a notable IPL 2026 season, finishing second in the points table alongside Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and advancing to Qualifier 1. However, they struggled in crucial matches against the eventual champions, leading to their defeat in both the Qualifier and the final.
As GT looks ahead to IPL 2027, they need to reassess their team and address key issues to avoid missing out on another title. Here are three players who might be released before the IPL 2027 auction:
1. Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler’s IPL 2026 stats appear good, with 526 runs at an average of 37.57 and a strike rate of 152.46, including four fifties. However, his performance in GT’s losses tells a different story.
In the seven matches that GT lost, Buttler scored only 199 runs at an average of 28.43 and a strike rate of 144.20. He managed just 29 runs in Qualifier 1 and struggled in the final, scoring 19 runs off 23 balls when the team was in dire need.
Given his poor performance in critical moments and a hefty price tag of INR 15.75 crore, GT may consider releasing him and trying to buy him back for a lower price in the auction.
2. Masood Shahrukh Khan
Masood Shahrukh Khan was retained for INR 4 crore, with the expectation he would bolster GT’s lower order. Unfortunately, he had a disappointing season, managing just 43 runs in five innings at an average of 10.75 and a strike rate of 130.30.
His lack of contributions weakened GT’s batting lineup, leading to his removal from the team after nine matches. With unmet expectations, GT might decide it’s time to move on.
3. Rahul Tewatia
Rahul Tewatia’s role as an allrounder diminished significantly in IPL 2026. The management didn’t give him any overs to bowl throughout the season.
He scored 190 runs at an average of 27.14 with a strike rate of 143.93. While consistent, his performance didn’t justify retention without the option of his bowling skills.
Despite a solid campaign, GT’s chances were affected by key players not performing in important moments. Letting go of high-cost or underperforming players might provide them the opportunity to rebuild more effectively for IPL 2027.
